Carbide Stone Turning Chisel
with Replaceable Tips
By Steve "Spike" Finch

If you have tried stone turning you know that it's not fun if you have to spend all your time sharpening your tools. I learned this lesson early on and made a set of carbide tipped chisels that I use just about everyday. Many of my art collectors are hobbiest wood turners and wanted to try stone turning. They asked me to make a set of carbide tipped chisels for them. After many requests, I decided it was time to offer my signature line of carbide stone turning chisels with replaceable and interchangeable tips.

My requirements were that I needed the chisel to function well, reduce chatter and be comfortable to use. I found that 16" was the perfect length, it would provide me with enough leverage yet still allow me to hold a strong grip at my side. The shaft needed to be strong so it would not bend under normal use. After testing a few different sizes, I found that a 3/8" X 3/4" was the right size. The handle needed to be easy to hold and also not transfer vibration to the user. I found a grip material that was specifically manufactured to absorb vibration and also offer a non-slip grip. I needed the carbide tips to not only be replaceable, but also interchangeable. That way, you would not need to buy two separate chisels.

I hope you find these chisels as useful as I have.
